ChatGPT or Claude Subscription Card Declined? Six Real Causes and How to Tell Them Apart

The checkout page only ever says your card was declined. It never says why. Six causes ranked by how often they actually happen, and the one test that splits them into two groups with completely different fixes.

TL;DR: Checkout tells you nothing useful, so start by splitting the problem in two. **Look at your card statement or issuer dashboard. If there is no attempted transaction at all, the merchant refused the card before charging** — that is issuing-country rules, a billing address mismatch, or the card range being blocked, and topping up will not help. **If you can see a declined attempt, the charge was tried and failed** — that is 3-D Secure, insufficient balance, or a duplicate subscription. Ranked by real-world frequency: (1) issuing-country rules, (2) billing address mismatch, (3) card range blocked at that specific merchant, (4) 3-D Secure not completed, (5) insufficient balance — prepaid cards especially, since merchants often authorize more than the sticker price, (6) an existing uncancelled subscription on the same account.

Why pre-authorization refusals are the hardest to diagnose

When a merchant's rules refuse a card by issuing country or card range, no transaction record is created anywhere — not on your statement, not in your card dashboard. From the browser it is indistinguishable from a real decline, so people top up repeatedly and retry, which does nothing. **The absence of a record is itself the diagnosis.** Once you know you are in this group, stop retrying and change the input: a different card range, or a billing address that matches the card.

Getting the billing address right

The rule is consistency, not cleverness. The address should match the card's issuing region, and it should stay the same once a charge succeeds. Repeatedly editing the billing address between attempts looks like probing behaviour to risk systems and makes things worse. If a card and address combination has worked before, leave it exactly as it was.

The prepaid balance trap

Many merchants authorize an amount larger than the subscription price — sometimes a fixed verification hold, sometimes the price plus tax. A prepaid card holding exactly the sticker amount will fail on a subscription it can technically afford. Keep a small buffer above the expected charge, and remember that renewals hit on their own schedule, not yours.

Same card, one merchant works and another does not

This is normal and it is not evidence your card is dead. Merchants maintain their own rules and those rules differ. Before replacing a card, test it somewhere else — if it works there, the card is fine and the problem is that specific merchant relationship. Replacing a working card on a false diagnosis costs you money and solves nothing.

A checklist in the right order

**1.** Check whether any transaction was attempted — this decides everything downstream. **2.** If nothing was attempted: verify the billing address matches the card, then try a different card range. **3.** If an attempt was declined: confirm 3-D Secure completed, check the available balance including any hold, and look for an existing subscription on the account. **4.** Only after all of that, contact support — and bring the timestamp and the exact amount, which is what makes a case actionable.

FAQ

I topped up more and it still failed. Why?

Almost certainly because you are in the first group — the charge was never attempted, so the balance was never the constraint. Check whether any transaction record exists before adding more funds.

Does using a virtual card make declines more likely?

Not inherently. What matters is the card range's standing at that merchant and whether the billing address matches. Plenty of virtual cards subscribe to major AI services without issue; plenty of physical cards get refused.
