Mixing Chinese and Overseas Models: DeepSeek and Claude on One Interface (2026 Cost Plan)

Cheap tasks on DeepSeek, hard tasks on Claude/GPT — one OpenAI-compatible interface, one key, switch by model code. A practical plan for mixing models.

1. Why mix: cost

Not every task deserves a top-tier model. Simple classification, extraction, rewriting and batch processing are well served by a cheap Chinese model such as DeepSeek; genuinely hard reasoning, long code and critical output are where Claude / GPT flagships earn their price. Assigning each task to a fitting model cuts cost substantially without losing quality — that is the whole point of mixing.

2. One interface, one key: switch codes to switch models

Mixing requires one interface that reaches several vendors, which an OpenAI-compatible relay provides: on cocodot, one key and one balance, base_url set to https://cocodot.co/api/ai/v1, and the model code selects the model — deepseek-v4-flash for DeepSeek, mco-6 for Claude Opus 4.8, mog-6 for GPT-5.5 — with no separate accounts or keys to maintain.

3. How to allocate tasks

A practical split: ① high-frequency / batch / simple (classification, tagging, summaries, formatting) → DeepSeek or other Chinese models, low unit price and good enough; ② low-frequency / critical / hard (complex reasoning, long code, user-facing final output) → Claude / GPT flagships for quality. Encode the rule in your routing so the expensive model runs only where it should.

4. Switching in code (only the model field)

Because everything is OpenAI-compatible, switching models is a single field: same client, same key; simple tasks pass model="deepseek-v4-flash", hard tasks pass model="mco-6", and the rest of the request is identical. A small function that returns a code by task type gives you automatic routing. The console's model list is authoritative for current codes.

5. Working out cost

cocodot bills per token with different unit prices per model (Chinese models well below overseas flagships), aligned with list — see cocodot.co/pricing. After mixing, total cost = the sum of each model's usage × its unit price; steer the bulk of traffic to the cheap model and the bill drops immediately. The console shows usage and charge per call for reconciliation and routing tuning.

6. Where Chinese models stand

DeepSeek and other Chinese models have improved quickly over the past two years and are genuinely capable in Chinese-language work, general Q&A and coding assistance, at low unit prices. Using them as the floor for high-frequency tasks and Claude / GPT to finish the hard ones is a very cost-effective combination today. Available models and prices are in the cocodot console model list.

7. Getting started

Sign up at cocodot, small Alipay top-up, create a key, set base_url to https://cocodot.co/api/ai/v1, run one call each on deepseek-v4-flash and mco-6 to feel the difference, then split your tasks into 'cheap floor plus flagship finish' — one wallet, one interface, cheaper and simpler.

About cocodot

cocodot is a payment and AI access service for developers and cross-border teams in mainland China. It provides US-BIN virtual cards issued by a licensed institution — used to pay for overseas subscriptions and ad accounts — and an OpenAI-compatible AI API gateway for calling Claude, GPT and Gemini from within mainland China. Both share one wallet, funded by Alipay and accounted in USD. Card: $9.9 to open, 3% to load, $1 per active card per month; spending: $0.60 settlement fee on purchases under $20; a corresponding fee applies when the issuer charges one.
