Open Models on SiliconFlow, Claude / GPT Elsewhere: A Two-Platform Setup (2026)
SiliconFlow does not offer Claude or GPT. Rather than switch, combine: open models on one side, closed flagships on the other, one codebase switching by model.
Why combining beats replacing
The hidden cost of switching platforms is underestimated: working configs, prepaid balances, team habits. The marginal cost of two platforms is near zero — both OpenAI-compatible, one extra base_url constant. More importantly, holding both means an outage on either side does not stop the business, which is real value in production.
How to configure it
Maintain a 'model → endpoint' map in code: open-model names point at your existing platform, Claude/GPT names point at the gateway. Pick the client by model name at call time. In Python: two OpenAI client instances, one base_url for A and one for B, plus a `pick_client(model)` function returning the right one — a dozen lines, after which business code only passes model names.
Choosing the provider for the closed half
Four checks you can finish before paying: ① model integrity — verify with an open-source probe that the real model is returned (we open-sourced ours: probe.cocodot.co, usable against any provider, including us); ② listed price = actual charge — top up the minimum and reconcile 10 calls one by one; ③ whether failures are billed; ④ a traceable entity. An hour covers all four; no marketing needs to be trusted.
cocodot's place in the combination
We are the 'closed half': Claude (Opus 5 / Sonnet 5 / Haiku), the GPT-5.x line and the Gemini family, plus Chinese models as backup. Alipay or card top-up, per-token billing, and the pricing page lists each model's vendor list price next to ours (see cocodot.co/pricing). If you already run open models on SiliconFlow, we neither intend nor need to replace it — filling the half you lack is enough.
A practical cost note
One benefit of two platforms is price-comparing per task: when both offer the same open model, take the cheaper; closed models exist on one side only, so no comparison. But the real savings lever is tiering, not comparison — moving simple tasks (classification, extraction, formatting) to cheap-tier models typically saves 40-60%, far more than choosing the cheaper platform.
Suggested division of labor
| Task type | Route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Batch tasks on open models (Qwen/GLM/DeepSeek) | SiliconFlow or another Chinese platform | Domestic connectivity, easy payment, full open-model catalog |
| Claude / GPT flagship tasks | OpenAI-compatible gateway | Closed models are available only via official or resale channels |
| Coding assistants (Claude Code / Cursor) | Gateway (pointed at Claude) | Tooling is most mature on Claude |
| Cost-sensitive chores | Whichever is cheaper | Both are metered; compare anytime |
